Who This Workbook is For

1. OBSERVE

  • Read the scene like a detective or a journalist.

  • Be curious, neutral, and thorough.

2. INVESTIGATE

  • Create a Scene Map based on the text, identifying and categorizing major topics.

  • Combine clues, ask questions, and extrapolate what’s unsaid.

  • Determine the character’s Four Psychological Elements and organize them in a worksheet.

  • Pull Back the Lens and define the Emotional Target.

3. PERSONALIZE

  • Use the Emotional Target and Four Elements to guide you to a Big Idea to connect to your own emotional life.

  • Reverse engineer the Four Psychological Elements to account for the major topics.

  • Run the scene. Reflect on whether you hit the Emotional Target and fully employed your Big Idea.

4. EXPLORE

  • If not, adjust your personalization — small or large changes.

  • If yes, still try new choices.

Never stop discovering.

What People Are Saying

"I’ve used Know Your Scenes for every audition, and it’s the tool that helps me feel the most organized and prepared. It walks you through the exact questions you should be asking about the scene, which makes the whole process a lot clearer. It’s become a really important part of how I approach my audition prep!"

-Ava P., Working Actor

"Once I learned Braden’s method for approaching scene work, every time I broke down a scene I found myself using pages and pages of notebook paper. I always thought having an actual workbook to organize all my acting ideas in one place would be amazing. This book does exactly that, but it also does so much more. It provides real lessons you can apply so that when you’re breaking down a scene, you’re truly exploring everything. In other acting classes, I've brought this book and had actors ask me about it!"

-Mariah D., Working Actor

"From someone who was always unsure what ‘do the work’ meant, this book is it. A fantastic step-by-step workbook for scene study all laid out for ya. Know Your Scenes gives you the space to practice what Braden outlines in Being Human. Where Being Human spells it out for you, Know Your Scenes gives you the pen."

-Nick P., Working Actor

"Before Braden’s technique, I didn’t have a real tangible method for my craft. I dabbled in some here and there, but nothing really stuck for me and I always had to alter my method depending on the scene. The reason I love the technique Braden teaches and has published is because it works no matter the scene, character or circumstance. If you’re someone who likes dissecting your craft in an analog way, you’ll definitely enjoy any or all of the BLS books."

-Shae L., Working Actor

"Braden takes you through breaking down a scene in the most accessible way and then lets you practice with his own template. It's a tried and true method that gives every actor the opportunity to focus their creativity through a clear structure."

-Sheil C., Working Actor

"Honestly this is the BEST booklet for both advanced and beginner actors. It shows you how to break down a scene and completely personalize it so that you're not just reading lines, you're feeling them and acting them out. The example in the booklet is super helpful too! All of these terms are fairly new to me, so it's nice to quickly flip back and reference the beginning. I use this with every single scene and it truly helps!! I would definitely recommend this to other aspiring actors!"

-Lindsey S., Working Actor

"Being an actor, I find that the scenes I go through are often easily forgotten due to the quantity of them. Not only does Know your Scenes allow you to track each audition/scene you are embarking upon, but it also provides a safe place to try out injunctions and ideas for your character. With an easy-to-follow flow chart method of the technique, this work book allows for stellar work to take root and blossom into a performance you don’t forget. If you’re an actor who finds your mind jumbled when it comes to scenes, I promise this work book is game changing."

-Ansley H., Working Actor

"Know Your Scenes is the book for any actor looking to master scene analysis. I use it for every scene, whether it is one line or a two-page monologue."

-Elijah J., Working Actor

"Braden's book series offers a clear, codified technique for actors to quickly activate their craft and reach the heart of a scene. His no-nonsense methodology is equally valuable for high-pressure auditions and in-depth rehearsal. Braden strips away the mystery and guesswork. These books are indispensable."

-Bert H., Working Actor

"If I'm ever worried I'm missing something, or my understanding of a scene is too surface-level, I use the structure of these pages. If you're short on time and you need to understand a scene quick, using this book is the most efficient way to get the necessary work in."

-Lennon C., Working Actor

How long does it take to analyze one scene?

It entirely depends on the scene and your proficiency. Anywhere from 15 minutes for a 2-page audition side to over an hour.

Can I use this for theatre?

Yes. The process works for any script, any medium.

Do I need to fill out every single question?

While learning this process, the best practice is to be comprehensive, yes. As you become more proficient, you'll find some questions answering themselves.

What if I don't have time for full analysis before an audition?

Do your best to make strong choices as quickly as possible. It's better to be strong but wrong than it is to be boring.

Can I use this for monologues?

Yes. The process works for monologues, scenes, and full scripts.

Is this Meisner? Adler? Stanislavski?

It draws from multiple techniques, especially Stella Adler's focus on given circumstances, but it's adapted for modern film/TV auditions.
